Yesterday I was in Stop and Shop, buying groceries when I picked up a package of rice and was startled by a older woman that was coming up behind me in the aisle. Why did she do this? I have no idea. I was just shopping, but anyway…the conversation went something like this:
Her: Oh I wish I knew how to cook that because I love rice, but it always turns out mushy or burned.
Me: Oh. Oh my god, you scared me! Rice? You want to cook rice? Well it’s super easy. Just measure out 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water in a pan. Put the pan on the stove on high until it boils, then turn the heat down to simmer/low, cover the pan, set the timer to 15 minutes and wait. Your rice will turn out perfect.
Her: Oh I just don’t know about that. My mom always made the rice growing up. I never paid attention. Now I don’t eat rice because I don’t know how to cook it
Me: But you can cook rice. Seriously. It’s super easy.
Her: Well I just don’t know about that.
Then she walked away.
I was pretty sure that she didn’t really want to talk about the rice though that seemed to be what the whole conversation was about. I think she just wanted to talk to someone today about something.
And I get that. Working from home has been such a blessing and a curse sometimes. I love that I don’t have to deal with co-workers and a boss, but I do miss talking to people everyday. Some days I spend the whole day on my computer or reading and I don’t have any interactions face-to-face with people. I personally enjoy this, but I do miss having those interactions.
Maybe that’s where the older woman I talked to was yesterday. She just wanted to talk to someone and because I looked friendly, she decided to strike up a conversation with me. Who knows. I’m glad she said hi and I was happy to offer her some rice cooking wisdom.
As I was leaving the store, she was standing at the register and she waved at me as if we were old friends. I had to smile and wave back because it made me feel good. I hope she had a beautiful day and maybe tries to make some good and tasty rice in the future.
